Do I need to take a class to renew my Michigan CPL?

Accepted Answer

No. Michigan does not require a renewal class. MCL 28.425l(9) waives the initial training requirement for renewals. Instead you sign a statement on the renewal application certifying that you completed at least 3 hours of review of the required training topics and at least 1 hour of firing range time in the 6 months immediately before you apply. Many people still take a short renewal class because it covers the review and the range hour in one sitting.

Can I do the Michigan CPL renewal review online?

Yes. The law does not require a live class or an instructor for the 3 hours of review, so an online or self-paced review counts. The 1 hour of firing range time cannot be done online. You have to actually shoot.

Do I need a certificate to renew a Michigan CPL?

Accepted Answer

No. MCL 28.425l(9) says a renewal applicant is not required to verify the statements made under that subsection and is not required to obtain a certificate. You certify the review and the range hour on the renewal application itself. Keep your own records if you want them, but no certificate is submitted or checked.

Does the range time for a Michigan CPL renewal have to be with an instructor?

Accepted Answer

No. Any firing range time in the 6 months before you apply counts toward the 1 hour. It does not have to be supervised and it does not have to be part of a class. Range time you did on your own qualifies.

Question 5

What happens if my Michigan CPL already expired?

Accepted Answer

You can still renew if it expired less than 1 year ago. Under MCL 28.425l(1) you are eligible for a renewal if your license is not expired, or expired within the 1 year before the date you apply. Once you pass 1 year it is no longer a renewal. You file a new application and take the full pistol safety training course of at least 8 hours required by MCL 28.425j.

Is there a grace period for carrying while a Michigan CPL renewal is processed?

Accepted Answer

Not once your license has expired. If you apply before your current CPL expires, the expiration is extended until the renewal is issued or denied, and the receipt carried together with your expired license counts as a valid CPL in the meantime. If you apply after your CPL already expired, you cannot carry concealed until the new license is issued. The 1 year window only protects your ability to renew instead of reapplying.

Question 7

Do I need new fingerprints to renew a Michigan CPL?

Accepted Answer

Usually not. A renewal applicant does not have to be fingerprinted again if the Michigan State Police already maintains the prints on file. MSP has kept CPL fingerprints since January 1, 2006, so anyone licensed after that date is normally covered.

Question 8

How much does a Michigan CPL renewal cost?

Accepted Answer

The state fee is $115. You pay it to your county clerk if you renew in person, or to the Michigan State Police if you renew online or by mail, and no other charge or local fee is allowed. If you choose to take a renewal class that is a separate cost paid to the instructor, plus whatever your range charges for the required hour.
