Renewal Process

Montana concealed weapon permits (CWPs) must be renewed periodically through the issuing county sheriff's office. The renewal process is governed by MCA § 45-8-322(3).

Note: Montana enacted constitutional carry (permitless carry) in 2021 via HB 102, meaning a permit is no longer required for most lawful carry within the state. However, many permit holders choose to renew for reciprocity with other states.

Renewal Timeline

• Permits are valid for 4-year periods
• Renewal requests must be made within 90 days before the permit's expiration date
• Per MCA § 45-8-322(3): "The permit must be renewed for additional 4-year periods upon payment of a $25 fee per renewal and upon request for renewal made within 90 days before expiration of the permit."
• No exceptions are granted to this timing requirement

Renewal Fees

Accepted payment methods vary by county but typically include cash (exact change), check, or money order. Credit cards may not be accepted at all offices.

Renewal Procedure

1. Obtain the renewal application from your county sheriff's office (some counties, such as Powell County, provide a separate renewal-specific application form)
2. Complete the application but do not sign or date it - you must sign in the presence of the sheriff or their designee
3. Schedule an appointment with the sheriff's civil division (required in most counties)
4. Bring valid Montana photo ID (Montana driver's license or state-issued picture ID)
5. Pay the $25.00 renewal fee at the time of application
6. Fingerprinting may be conducted at the appointment (procedures vary by county)

If Your Permit Has Expired

If you fail to renew within the 90-day window before expiration, you will need to submit a new application at the full initial application fee of $50.00-$55.00 (varies by county). Some counties may also require updated fingerprints and proof of firearms safety training, as with an original application.

Change of County Residence

If you move to a different county while holding a valid permit, you must notify the sheriff and chief of police of both counties within 10 days of the change in residence.
