Rhode Island prohibits the open carry of handguns without a permit. Individuals who wish to openly carry a handgun must obtain a carry permit through one of the state's two permitting pathways:

Post-Bruen Note: On July 19, 2022, the Attorney General issued guidance advising that Rhode Island's dual concealed carry permitting scheme is constitutional and unimpacted by the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen.
As of June 21, 2022, Rhode Island prohibits the open carry of any loaded rifle or shotgun on any public roadway.
This law was enacted through Public Laws 2022 Ch. 133 / Ch. 134 (House Bill 7358A / Senate Bill 2825), signed by Governor Daniel J. McKee on June 21, 2022.
