Renewal Process
Arizona Concealed Carry Permit Renewal Process
Statutory Authority
The renewal of Arizona concealed carry weapon (CCW) permits is governed by A.R.S. § 13-3112, specifically subsections I, K, and L.
Permit Validity
A CCW permit is valid for five years from the date of issuance (A.R.S. § 13-3112(I)).
Military exception: A permit held by a member of the United States armed forces (including the Arizona National Guard or reserves) who is on federal active duty and deployed overseas is extended until 90 days after the end of the member's overseas deployment (A.R.S. § 13-3112(I)).
Renewal Timeline
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) Concealed Weapons Permit Unit (CWPU) sends a renewal reminder notice and renewal application form to the permit holder at least 60 days before the permit expiration date (A.R.S. § 13-3112(K)).
DPS recommends submitting the renewal application at least 90 days prior to permit expiration, or immediately following receipt of the "Notice of Renewal" letter from the CWPU.
The permit is renewable every five years (A.R.S. § 13-3112(K)).
Renewal Application Requirements
Complete a CCW Renewal Application - available through the DPS online portal or by paper form.
Renewal fee:$43 (compared to $60 for an initial application).
No additional fingerprints required - for renewal purposes, the permit holder is not required to submit additional fingerprints (A.R.S. § 13-3112(K)).
No additional firearms competency demonstration required - the renewal process does not require re-demonstration of firearm competence.
Background Check
Before a permit may be renewed, DPS must conduct a criminal history records check pursuant to A.R.S. § 41-1750 within 60 days after receipt of the renewal application (A.R.S. § 13-3112(K)).
If the applicant is no longer eligible for a CCW permit, DPS must suspend or revoke the permit and notify the applicant in writing (A.R.S. § 13-3112(M)).
Late Renewal / Expired Permits
If a renewal application is received more than 60 days after the expiration date of the CCW permit, DPS must deny the renewal application.
In that case, the applicant must complete a new initial CCW application and pay the full initial application fee of $60.
Renewal applications received 61 days or more after expiration will be returned to the permit holder.
Expired Permit as Proof of Competence
An expired CCW permit issued by DPS may be used as proof of firearm competence for a new application, provided the permit was in good standing at the time of expiration. Revoked or suspended permits will not be accepted as proof of competence (A.R.S. § 13-3112(E)(6)(a)).
Online Renewal
Renewal applications can be submitted online through the DPS CCW permit portal at azdpsccw.permitium.com.
Fee Deposit
All initial and renewal application fees are deposited in the Concealed Weapons Permit Fund established by A.R.S. § 41-1722 (A.R.S. § 13-3112(U)).
