Iowa Prohibited Places for Firearms

Even with permitless carry (Iowa Code Section 724.4C) or a valid Permit to Carry Weapons, Iowa law and federal law identify a number of locations where carrying a firearm is unlawful. The list below reflects the most commonly encountered prohibitions.

State-Law Prohibited Places

School Grounds (Iowa Code Section 724.4B)

It is a Class D felony for anyone to go armed with, or knowingly possess or transport, a firearm or other dangerous weapon on the grounds of a school. "School" under Iowa Code Section 280.2 includes public and accredited nonpublic schools (K-12). Limited exceptions include:

• Peace officers
• School resource officers acting within their official duties
• Members of the armed forces or National Guard acting in the line of duty
• School-authorized firearm safety, hunter education, or shooting sports programs (per Iowa Code Section 724.4B(2))
• An adult lawfully transporting a child to or from a school authorized activity who keeps the firearm in a locked vehicle out of view

Important: The federal Gun-Free School Zones Act (18 U.S.C. Section 922(q)) creates a 1,000-foot zone around schools where carrying a firearm is restricted; an exception exists for license holders if the state license requires a background check. An Iowa PCW satisfies that exception; permitless carriers may not have a comparable federal exception within 1,000 feet of a school zone.

State Capitol, Courthouses, and Government Buildings

Iowa Code does not contain a single statute that universally prohibits firearms in all state and local government buildings. However:

• The Iowa Judicial Branch prohibits weapons in courthouses and judicial buildings under court rules
• Many county courthouses post "no weapons" notices that carry the force of law as building rules; violation may result in a contempt finding and removal
• The Iowa State Capitol is generally accessible with firearms unless the Legislative Council adopts a contrary rule for a particular legislative day; check current rules before carrying

Hospitals and Mental Health Institutions

Iowa Code Section 724.4 does not categorically prohibit weapons at hospitals, but a hospital may, as a private or public landowner, post and enforce its own no-weapons policy.

Places of Business That Sell Alcohol

Iowa Code Section 724.4 does not categorically prohibit carrying in places that sell alcohol. However, see UNDER_INFLUENCE: Iowa Code Section 724.4D prohibits carrying while intoxicated.

Public Parks, State Parks, and Iowa Department of Natural Resources Lands

Iowa Code Section 461A.42 historically restricted firearms in state parks but was significantly liberalized. Currently, lawfully possessed firearms may generally be carried in state parks, but specific Iowa DNR rules and area-specific restrictions may apply.

Federal Prohibited Places

These apply in Iowa regardless of any state-level permit:

• Federal buildings (18 U.S.C. Section 930) - including federal courthouses, social-security offices, federal post offices, IRS offices, federal agency headquarters
• National parks and wildlife refuges (buildings only) - firearms may be possessed in national park land if lawful under state law, but federal building interiors remain off-limits
• Secure areas of airports past the TSA screening (49 U.S.C. Section 46505); see TRANSPORT for carry-on rules
• K-12 school zones under the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act (18 U.S.C. Section 922(q)) unless the carrier qualifies for the licensed-carrier exception (an Iowa PCW issued after a background check qualifies)
• Military installations - federal regulations govern
• VA medical facilities - 38 C.F.R. Section 1.218 prohibits firearms

Private Property

Iowa does not have a single statute that imposes criminal liability for entering a privately posted "no weapons" location while armed. However:

• A private property owner may ask an armed person to leave; refusal to leave is criminal trespass under Iowa Code Section 716.7 or 716.8
• An employer may impose workplace policies prohibiting firearms; violation is grounds for discharge
• Iowa Code Section 724.4(4) treats an unauthorized concealed weapon offense more leniently when the carry is in compliance with private-property policies, but it does not provide a safe harbor for ignoring posted policies

Polling Places

Iowa Code does not categorically prohibit firearms at polling places. Polling-place rules adopted by county auditors or election commissioners may, however, restrict firearms inside polling locations.

Bars and Liquor Stores

While there is no categorical statutory ban on carrying in establishments licensed to sell alcohol, the establishment may post its own restrictions, and the carrier must remain sober and unimpaired under Iowa Code Section 724.4D.

Game Refuges and Wildlife Areas

Iowa Code Section 481A.124 and related Iowa DNR rules govern firearms on wildlife management areas and game refuges. Specific area rules vary; consult the Iowa DNR before carrying in a wildlife area.

Carry Across State Lines

When carrying outside Iowa, you are subject to the laws of the state you are in. Iowa's permit and permitless-carry status do not override another state's prohibited-place restrictions.

Practical Reminders

• Check posted signage on entry; some buildings post "No Weapons" with statutory authority
• Federal facilities are off-limits regardless of any Iowa permit
• Iowa Code Section 724.4B (schools) is broadly enforced and carries felony penalties
• Confirm courthouse and capitol rules before entering with a firearm
