Nebraska State Patrol - Troop Area Offices CHP applications can be submitted in person at any NSP Troop Area Office. No appointment is necessary for personal data changes or lost/stolen replacements.

Law Enforcement Contact Requirements

Per Neb. Rev. Stat. § 28-1202.04, whenever a person carrying a concealed handgun is contacted by a law enforcement officer or emergency services personnel, they are required to immediately inform the officer or personnel that they are carrying a concealed handgun. The officer may secure the handgun during the contact. The handgun will be returned once it is determined there is no threat to safety and the person has not committed any other violation that would result in arrest.

Important Notes

• Name/Address Changes: Your CHP must contain your current name and address to be valid. Update your information with the DMV first, wait approximately 2-3 business days, then submit a CHP update online at no cost or deliver the application to any NSP Troop Area Office.
• Beware of Unofficial Websites: The Nebraska State Patrol has noted that third-party websites charge fees (e.g., $17.00) for services that are free through the official state portal. NSP cannot compel these sites to issue refunds. Always use the official portal at https://www.nebraska.gov/apps-nsp-chp/.
• LB 77 (2023): Nebraska's permitless carry law was enacted through LB 77 in 2023, which amended multiple sections of the Concealed Handgun Permit Act. While permitless carry is now available, the CHP program continues to operate for those who wish to obtain a permit for reciprocity purposes or other benefits.
