After the 30-business-day grace period, the permit holder must start the process over as a new applicant, including retaking the certified training course and paying the full $100 initial permit fee.

When renewing online, the NSP may substitute a photograph obtained from the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles.
Important: If updating personal information (name or address), the permit holder must update their information with the DMV first and allow up to 3 days for changes to post before requesting a CHP renewal. If both updating information and renewing, submit a renewal request only (the update will be handled as part of the renewal).

The NSP must renew a permit for five years, subject to the permit holder's continuing compliance with all qualifications for the permit. A permit holder is subject to having their permit revoked if they no longer meet the eligibility requirements.

Nebraska's Constitutional Carry law (LB 77), passed in 2023, allows any person who is not a minor or a prohibited person to carry a concealed handgun anywhere in Nebraska with or without a permit. Therefore, a permit holder whose permit has expired may still legally carry a concealed handgun while their renewal is being processed, provided they are not a prohibited person.

As of the date of source material (April 2026), the Nebraska State Patrol has issued a notice regarding record numbers of concealed handgun permit renewals, resulting in longer-than-usual wait times. Renewal applications are being processed in order of earliest expiration date. Permit holders whose current permit has not yet expired are advised to allow additional time for processing. Those who have not received their renewal permit by the expiration date should contact the NSP at (402) 471-4545.
